Transgendered Teen Takes Life, Leaves Note
After much pain & suffering & lack of support/understanding for her transgender identity (especially from that of her own mother who looked down upon her & tried to "cure" her through various Christian therapy sessions), 17 Year old Leelah Alcorn of Kings Mills, Ohio decided that she had had enough & on December 28th at around 2:30am took her life by walking out in front of a moving semi.
The note she left read: "My death needs to mean something." "My death needs to be counted in the number of transgender people who commit suicide this year. I want someone to look at the number & say, that's fucked up & fix it. Fix society, please." Also, she made mention to her feeling like she was a girl trapped in a boy's body since the age of 4.
This sad tragic loss of life should never have happened. Through love, understanding & guidance of adults around her, especially her mother, Leelah would have had the chance to blossom into the person she truly was.
Our LGBT youth look to us adults for understanding & compassion & we must be there to help & or guide whenever we can.
