Office Of The People Used To Deny Civil Liberties/Rights

Senator Diaz To Hold Anti Equality Rally

New York - Senator/minister Ruben Diaz (D) has made it clear all along that he is opposed to marriage equality in the state but has taken his message 1 step further by holding an "emergency summit" to consider the next steps/strategies for fighting any passage of a marriage equality bill in New York.

Recently, in his strict criticism of Governor David Paterson's call for a vote on the bill, Diaz said that it was "ridiculous," particularly given the fact that Archbishop Timothy Dolan was being installed.

Why did Diaz become involved in state politics? How can he be for New Yorkers when he uses his religion to deny some the equal protections/rights that others take for granted?

Also to be noted is that Diaz is planning an "anti equality rally" for May.

Contact - Senator Diaz (D) or call (518)455-2511 and tell him he should not be using the office of the people to deny others their rights/liberties!

Maine Moves Closer Towards Marriage Equality

Marriage Equality Endorsed By Maine Panel

Detail Maine State Flag

Augusta, Maine - In a bill that could end marriage discrimination to Maine Families, 11 out of 14 judiciary panel members voted in favor of passing the Marriage Equality Bill.

"For me, it came down to discrimination. It's not there" under present law, said one of the supporters, Representative Mark Bryant (D).

Another supporter, Representative Charles Kruger (D) said "Live and let live."

One of the opponents of the bill who had shouted "the bill is morally wrong" had to be ejected by authorities for disrupting the proceedings.

Anti equality group Maine Marriage Alliance said that if the bill were to pass thru both houses, they would begin the process of trying to Amend the state's Constitution to define marriage as only between 1 man and 1 woman.

Also, the group is calling for marriage equality foes to "defend" marriage by praying and keeping up the activism of "The protection of marriages across America from the deceitful plans of the enemy (Psalm 61:13)
"

Contact - Maine Marriage Alliance and tell them to "defend" marriage equality for all Maine families by strengthening values of commitments and reducing the rates of divorce.

Contact - Governor John Baldacci (D) and tell him to do the right thing to support all families in Maine by standing in support of marriage equality.

Contact - State Senators and tell them to end discrimination due to the intolerance of the religious right by supporting all families in Maine by passing full marriage equality.

A Strong Voice(s) For Marriage Equality In New York

Pushing For Marriage Equality In New York

NY State Capitol Building

Albany, New York - Gay Rights groups gathered from around the state Tuesday at the state capitol calling for New York to do the right thing for marriage equality.

"What do we want, marriage equality! When do we want it? Now!"

It is estimated at around 2,000 supporters showed up for the rally and lobby day which is sponsored by the Empire State Pride Agenda.

"This is the first year we have a realistic chance," said Joann Prinzivalli of White Plains who is a lawyer and the director of the New York Transgender Rights Association.

Governor David Paterson (D) said "I want to make a marriage equality bill right here in New York state." That statement gave the governor a standing ovation.

Senator James Alesi (R) and Senator Steven Saland (R) are among the senators the lobbyist are hoping will vote in favor of the Bill's passage but in a statement made by Saland, he said "I do not anticipate supporting gay marriage."

Contact - Senator James Alesi or call (518)455-2015 and tell him that it's ok for him to have his beliefs but it should not get in the way of fairness and equality for all New York families.

Lets Move Forward To Put Hate Crime Laws On The Books

Toll Free Call To Stop Hate Crimes

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee passed the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (H.R. 1913). Right-wing committee members tried to tack on many harmful amendments but all were defeated.

Now, in order to ensure speedy success in the full House, your representative needs to hear from you. Our coalition has provided a toll-free number to make it extra-easy for activists to call their reps and urge them to SUPPORT H.R. 1913.

Call right now, toll-free, and urge YOUR U.S. representative to vote YES on the Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

866-346-4611

The toll-free number will expire on Wednesday, so make sure to call today and let others know about the number too as soon as you can.

The bill expands the coverage of existing hate crime laws to include not only victims of crime based on race, color, religion and national origin, but also bias-motivated crimes based on the victim's actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or disability. And it gives the DOJ the authority to prosecute hate crimes in states where current law or local actions are inadequate

We've been working hard to get this bill passed for years, and if we pass it this year, President Obama will sign it.

The Religious Right has built a campaign against this legislation based on an outright lie: that the bill would somehow criminalize religious speech. In fact, this bill is about preventing and punishing only violent acts that result in bodily harm and has nothing to do with any expression not specifically related to a violent act -- there's even a provision in the bill stating this explicitly.

We won't let the Right get away with its divisive lies and we won't let our fellow Americans go unprotected against bias-based violence.

Call now, toll-free, and tell your representative to vote YES on H.R. 1913.

866-346-4611

Thank you.

Tax Free Bigotry/Inequality

Churches Awaiting Response From IRS

Internal Revenue Service

Milwaukee - After months of ignoring a federal tax law on endorsing candidates from the pulpit, 33 churches around the country are awaiting the word on whether the IRS will prosecute for violating the law.

"Pulpit Freedom Sunday,"
triggered a legal fight on whether to overturn rules that prevent places of worship from supporting or opposing a candidate for political office.

On September 28th, pastors urged voters to cast their votes based on conservative views which of course included abortion and gay rights.

The protests were funded by the anti gay organization Alliance Defense Fund.

Legal experts say there are a number of possibilities the IRS can take from just doing nothing to various fines or penalties to losing their tax exempt status. But as of yet, the IRS remains silent.

Contact - Alliance Defense Fund and tell them they were wrong to promote bigotry and inequality in their messages to an organization that is tax exempt.

Contact - The IRS and tell them as an American Taxpayer, you are seeking justice against these organizations that promote inequality towards other American Taxpayers.

District 8 includes the Villages of Sleepy Hollow (in the Town of Mount Pleasant), Tarrytown and Elmsford (in the Town of Greenburgh), parts of the unincorporated Town of Greenburgh (North Elmsford and Fairview), and parts of the City of White Plains.

"I have interviewed with the appropriate Democratic committees in Greenburgh and White Plains," said Joann and am hoping that the various municipal committees will endorse a single candidate - if I am not that candidate I will support the candidate endorsed by the party. If there is no endorsement, or no agreement among the municipal committes as to a single candidate, I will participate in a primary.

Volunteers will be needed to help with obtaining petition signatures - the political calendar provides that petition-gathering can take place between June 9th and July 16th, with completed petitions to be filed between July 13th and 16th.

We will also need volunteers to help plan fundraising events. A political campaign requires money so that we can get the word out and encourage people to vote.

P.R.I.D.E. Panel Raises Awareness, Answers

Answering With Pride

By Zachary Hughes

As part of an ongoing week of events, People R
especting Individuality in Education (P.R.I.D.E.) hosted a panel Tuesday night in the Flint Hills Room of Memorial Union. The panel members answered questions about the gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-gendered community.

“I was invited to come to this event by a friend, and I support P.R.I.D.E., so I decided to come and show that support,” said Jonathan Heath, sophomore psychology major. “I’m interested to hear what kinds of questions were asked.”

Questions were selected from a box which was available in the Memorial Union Monday afternoon for students to submit questions to be answered by a P.R.I.D.E. member. Questions answered included issues related to discrimination, identity expression and “coming out.”

Answering questions related to GLBT issues was part of a larger goal of education over P.R.I.D.E. week, said Derrek Zietz, junior communication major and education chair for P.R.I.D.E.

“What we are there for is to educate, not only the group but the public as well, as to discrimination issues that affect students, particularly the GLBTQA community, which stands for Gay Lesbian Bisexual Trans-gendered Questioning and Ally community,” Zietz said. “We are there to educate on political issues that affect us in Emporia and around the world.”

The overall idea behind P.R.I.D.E. week is one of information and awareness, including spreading knowledge about what it means to be a member of P.R.I.D.E. and what it means to be an ally, Zietz said.

Allies, a term for any individual who supports raising awareness and support for GLBT issues, were represented during an Ally Appreciation Day on Wednesday, Zietz said.

“Ally Day is to raise awareness in the general public that just because you are a member of P.R.I.D.E. doesn’t mean you’re gay… you can be an Ally and be heterosexual,” Zietz said. “Just because you see someone supporting P.R.I.D.E. doesn’t mean you are gay and people shouldn’t assume that.”

Educating people over trans-issues was also a major goal during the week.

“We also wanted to educate people on what it means to be trans-gendered, transvestite, and so on, and let people know what that means,” Zietz said, “which is why we’re holding Thursday’s event.”

Thursday’s events include a speech by Sylvia Guerrero, the mother of a murdered trans-individual, which will take place at 7 p.m. in the Kanza Room of the Memorial Union.

P.R.I.D.E. week was the result of a collaboration of efforts between P.R.I.D.E. and supportive groups and individuals at and around ESU.

“The ESU groups have been awesome in helping us get this together, Amnesty International in particular,” Zietz said. “Several organizations donated money to us, including some groups off campus, and we’re really thankful for that.”

For those who attended, P.R.I.D.E. represented the ability of GLBT people to stand in the open without fear. For psychology graduate student Joshua Smith, that also means respecting individuals for who they are.

That respect includes an awareness that GLBT issues are not simply hot-topic or trendy issues and that organizations like P.R.I.D.E. are created in the spirit of fostering unity rather than antagonism, Smith said.

“We want to send a message that we as the GLBTQA community are here, and we’re not going away or sitting silently,” Smith said. “It’s time to accept us for who we are – we’re not anyone’s enemies, we’re just people like everyone else.”

Former Mayor Shows True "Hypocitical" Colors

Vows Fight Against NY Marriage Equality

Rudy Giuliani

New York - Former NYC Mayor Rudolph "hypocritical bigot" Giuliani (R) vows to take a stand against the upcoming New York marriage equality showdown.

In a firm belief in the "sanctity of marriage (3 marriages, 1 of which was to a cousin of his, an affair as well as his current wife having divorced twice)," Giuliani says that he supports civil unions but believes marriage is strictly between 1 man and 1 woman and said - "I do think that people who have a sexual orientation one kind or another should NOT be discriminated against"

Rudy, who's been giving Governor David Paterson (D) much grief over his support and recent vote for marriage equality in New York, is receiving support of the GOP and is making sure his socially conservative peers are clearly understanding of his shock and appall of the gay marriage issue.

"Good for Rudy for having the courage to speak up now for marriage as the union of husband and wife," said Maggie Gallagher, the woman who seems unable to stay away from the hyperbole when talking about wedding bells of gay couples.

Contact - Rudolph Giuliani and let him know that he needs to keep religion out of government and that if he is to run for Governor of New York, he needs to stand up for all New York families.

Email - Maggie Gallagher or call
(202)216-9430 and tell her she is wrong to discriminate against marriage equality and that her organization "Institute For Marriage And Public Policy" needs to stand up for marriage for ALL FAMILIES and that she needs to concentrate more on the social issues of divorce.

President Obama, What About DOMA?

A Campaign Promise In Allowing To Serve Openly

Barack Obama

"Counterproductive Strategy" - On the campaign trail, "Senator" Obama had promised to work towards lifting the ban against gays serving openly. That time is NOW

Now, Defense Secretary Robert Gates says it could take years to actually bring about the change of the U.S. Military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" or "DOMA"which forbids gays from serving openly in the armed services.

"If it ever happens..."

Gates, who recently spoke at the U.S. Army War College says he hasn't taken a position yet on when it whether gays should be open about their sexuality which, under current rules can lead to discharge.

Gates says to a group of reporters that "it's a touchy subject" and that he needs to have a one on one conversation with others regarding it.

I say, it's time for Gates to go! Mr. President, can you hear us? Serving proudly in the military is what its all about!

Olympia, Washington - Bigoted group, Washington Values Alliance is seeking to prepare a referendum to have the newly enacted Domestic Partnership Bill repealed which similar to civil union laws.

The anti equality group hopes to have the needed signatures collected to put the question to voters by November.

The newly enacted law makes domestic partnerships equal to marriage in various areas of powers of attorney, property and guardianship. Also, it allows partners the right to refuse to testify against partners in court.

To be eligible under the law, couples must be 18 or older and not be currently married or in any other domestic partnership. The law also requires couples to live under the same roof and be financially dependent of each other.

A New GOP Direction?

GOP Warned It Risks Becoming "Religious Party"

Steve Schmidt, former top adviser to John McCain during the presidential campaign, is urging Republicans to shift their views on gay marriage. (AP Photo)

Washington - Steve Schmidt, the former top adviser from the McCain presidential campaign urged fellow Republicans to warm up to gay rights and warned that if the GOP didn't heed his advice, they risk becoming the "religious party" with their focus on opposition to same sex marriage.

Schmidt urged Republicans, in the near term to endorse civil unions and stop using the Bible as rationale for marriage equality.

Schmidt, whose sister is gay and who supports marriage equality, said he understands the Republican Party probably won't reverse its course on resistance to marriage equality anytime soon though.

"If the party is seen as anti-gay, then that is injurious to its candidates," especially in Democrat leaning states he said.

Threatened Before It Is Signed

"All But Marriage Bill" Threatened By Bigots

State seal of Washington

Olympia, Washington - Opponents of a recently passed Legislative bill granting full rights and responsibilities to domestic partnerships vows to gather signatures to put it to a referendum when the governor sign it into law.

Governor Chris Gregoire (D) recent stated, "I want to thank the Legislators who worked tirelessly to get this bill passed in the House. The Legislation will expand basic benefits, provide better financial security and ensure equal treatment for Domestic Partners living in Washington State. Our state is one that thrives on diversity. We have to respect and protect all families that make up our communities. I look forward to receiving this bill, and signing it into law."

Although Domestic Partnerships are not equal in the sense of Marriage Equality, the new protections and benefits afforded by it is a step in the right direction.

Rights Should Not Be Stifled By Fear

Governor Introduces Marriage Equality Bill

State seal of New York

New York City - In a show of support for equality, Governor David Paterson (D), surrounded by Christine Quinn (D), NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R) and various union and gay rights organizations leaders has introduced a same sex marriage bill this morning.

The proposal is the same bill the Democratic controlled state Assembly introduced in 2007. Unfortunately, the bill never made it out of the previously Republican controlled Senate for a vote.

Paterson said "gays and lesbian couples are denied over 1,350 civil protections such as health care and pensions because they can't marry."

"Rights should not be stifled by fear. What we should understand is silence should not be a response to injustice. And that if we take no action, we will surely lose" says Paterson.

Strange how the ones who claim to be so "patriotic" are the ones rallying against taxes. How do you think the country operates?

Why is it the GOP is always complaining when anyone wants to have the rich pay their fair share?

There is nothing wrong with paying taxes as long as they are fair and equal to all, not just the sheltered rich.

If it's anyone who should be paying a reduction in taxes, it should be the LGBT community as the GOP bigots insist we are NOT equal and therefore not entitled to many of the benefits our straight counterparts share and enjoy.

Des Moines, Iowa - Law enforcement officials have begun an investigation into the death threats of openly gay politician Matt McCoy (D)

Threats and emotions were raised by opponents of same sex marriage after the April 3rd decision that Iowa would no longer discriminate against same sex couples in regards to marriage equality.

Since the threats against the Senator, the State Police issued an advisory to all legislators that if they receive any threats through their emails or legislative phones to contact them.

Amazon's "Oops" Corrected

Amazon Restores Sales Ratings

amazon.com

New York - The missing sales numbers are returning back to Amazon.

After 2 days of removing the sales ranks of LGBT books caused by the "glitch," the numbers have returned.

Some authors who's rankings were dropped have posted messages to Amazon saying their books had been categorized as adult and were removed from the best selling lists and searches.

Amazon has yet to comment on the messages but called the deletions an "embarrassing and ham-fisted cataloging error" and said there would be new measures implemented to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future.

Sounds like someone at Amazon has a lot of explaining to do and that the gay community should not fully accept the "ham-fisted cataloging error" excuse.

Conservatives believe if a Constitutional Convention were held, a vote on a Constitutional Amendment banning same sex marriage could go to the voters by a special election in 2011.

Stand with your LGBT brothers and sisters. Email - Iowa Legislators and tell them to support equality in marriage for all Iowans and that bigotry does not belong in the state's Constitution.

So, are we heading to yet another "Proposition 8 like showdown?" Stay tuned.

Designating Who Without Marriage

Designated Beneficiary Act Signed Into Law

State seal of Colorado

Denver - Governor Bill Ritter (D) signs House Bill 09-1260 also know as the Designated Beneficiary Act into law.

Introduced by Representative Ferrandino,
the bill authorizes two adults who are not married to enter into a designated beneficiary agreement. In the absence of a super ceding legal document, a designated beneficiary agreement entitles each party to certain rights and responsibilities.

Under those certain rights and responsibilities to committed unmarried couples including same sex are designations in health care, hospital visits, inheritance rights and dependencies.

It is long overdue in passing protections and rights to ALL COMMITTED LOVING CITIZENS OF COLORADO and not just those that can "legally show their love thru marriage."

Email - Governor Bill Ritter or call (303)866-2471 and thank him for doing the right thing.

Hate, Bigotry, Oppression Rhode Island Style!

Governor Donald Carcieri Joins Anti Gay Organization

File:Carcieri visiting NOAA clipped.JPG

Providence - Governor Donald Carcieri (R) made a recent "major step" in the battle to "protect" the state of Rhode Island against the LGBT community by joining the Rhode Island chapter of The National Organization For Marriage (another nationally bigoted hate group who's soul purpose is to rid America of fairness in marriage equality). Besides the Governor becoming it's star state member, his wife Sue also happily joined (I wonder if it was under the "family plan") the fight to make the state safe and help guarantee it's citizens that the sky will not fall in Rhode Island as long as she and her gov husband are part of the fight!

Email - Governor Carcieri or call his office - (401)222-2080 and tell him that he is VERY WRONG using his office to join and promote a group that uses tactics of fear, lies and deception to sway individuals to pass laws that deny a group of individuals their civil rights and liberties

Shame on you Governor Carcieri!

Lets Get With It New York State Senate!

Governor David Paterson Calls For Marriage Equality Vote

David Paterson

Albany - Governor David Paterson is calling on the New York State Senate to vote on same sex marriage, even if there is not enough votes to pass equality legislation.

Same sex marriage legislation passed the Assembly in 07 but failed in the former GOP controlled Senate (they refused to take up the bill).

Democrats who now control the Senate still don't have the necessary votes needed says Senate Majority Leader Malcolm A. Smith (D) who goes on to say he does not want to bring up the bill at this time but rather when there is a better chance at more votes.

Both Smith and Paterson are on record as strong supporters of marriage equality.

Paterson spoke on a local radio station saying he wants to bring up the bill for a vote ahead of the upcoming Marriage Equality Day lobby which is scheduled for the 28th of April. The event which is held annually is organized by the Empire State Pride Agenda.

Email - New York State Senators and tell them to do the right thing and vote for what is right and fair. We want nothing more, nothing less!

I Do Vermont!

Marriage Equality Comes To Vermont!

Flag of Vermont

In a show of strength against intolerance and bigotry, Vermont becomes the 4th state in the union to pass marriage equality.

With the promised veto by Vermont's Governor Jim Doulgas (R), the Vermont Senate garnered the 2/3rd votes necessary to override it and pass marriage equality. The new law goes into effect September 1st.

Another first for marriage equality is the legislative passage without any lawsuits or court orders. Vermont stands with Massachusetts, Iowa and Connecticut in doing the right thing!

Congratulations! Lets celebrate and continue the fight!

Equality Iowa!

Iowa Supreme Court Strikes Down Gay Marriage Ban

State seal of Iowa

In a unanimous vote of the Iowa Supreme Court, the state's law on discriminating marriage as only between 1 man and 1 woman has been struck down as unconstitutional.

"The statue that limits civil marriage as between 1 man and 1 woman violates the equal protection clause under Iowa's Constitution" said the justices in their 69 page ruling.

Civil Unions were discounted as an alternative to marriage.

The recent decision means that gays and lesbians will be granted immediate marriage licenses with the ability to marry in 21 days.

"I Want To Recruit You!"

MILK

Harvey Milk

Being an infrequent movie goer, I have to say that for the first time in awhile, it was actually a pleasure (and not tiring as I have fallen asleep in theaters in the past) to see a movie, especially a documentary on the life of someone who really made an impact on our community.

A big thank you goes out to my friend Grace who invited me to see the movie.

If you are like me and don't really enjoy going to the movies, trust me on this one as I say:
"I want to recruit you to see it!"

Harvey Milk, an openly gay man and activist who grew tired of seeing how the gay community was treated and being a constant target of the police, had just had enough and decided that someone had to make a stand.

With no representation in government and that what little rights (and I do mean little) we had, Harvey Milk set out to run for political office. After a run of 3 unsuccessful bids, Milk would claim victory in 1977 to become one of San Fransisco's first openly gay Board Supervisors (district 5).

Serving 11 months, Milk would go on to pass a stringent gay rights ordinance for San Fransisco before tragically being gunned down on November 27th, 1978 along with Mayor George Moscone by a former Board Supervisor named Dan White (White whom had recently resigned but in a failed attempt at getting his job back after second thoughts decided that he would get even).

Go see the movie and become inspired to stand up for our rights because if you don't, the memories of a great individual like Milk will be just that, memories.
