Washington - Steve Schmidt, the former top adviser from the McCain presidential campaign urged fellow Republicans to warm up to gay rights and warned that if the GOP didn't heed his advice, they risk becoming the "religious party" with their focus on opposition to same sex marriage.

Schmidt urged Republicans, in the near term to endorse civil unions and stop using the Bible as rationale for marriage equality.

Schmidt, whose sister is gay and who supports marriage equality, said he understands the Republican Party probably won't reverse its course on resistance to marriage equality anytime soon though.

"If the party is seen as anti-gay, then that is injurious to its candidates," especially in Democrat leaning states he said.

Keep a smile on your face and love in your heart!
